Do You Trust Your Supplement Provider?

June 8th, 2016

Nature Made recall serves as a reminder to always buy your supplements from a safe and reliable source.

Earlier this month, Pharmavite LLC, the maker of Nature Made brand vitamins, issued a recall for four products that may potentially be contaminated with salmonella or staphylococcus bacteria:

  • Nature Made Adult Gummies Multi Vitamins (1196071, 1196066 and 1205052)
  • Nature Made Adult Gummies Multi plus Omega-3 (1173600)
  • Nature Made Adult Gummies for Her plus Omega-3s (1196048 and 1196050)
  • Nature Made Super B Complex w/C Folic Acid Tablets (1204735, 1173146, 1173779, 1204001 and 1170987)

If you have any of these products at home, you should discard them immediately, as the bacteria that these supplements may be contaminated with can cause serious health issues. Salmonella can cause serious or even fatal infections in older people and in individuals with suppressed immune systems. Infection may result in infected aneurysms, endocarditis, and arthritis. Staphylococcus can cause food poisoning, and in severe cases it may even cause changes in blood pressure and pulse rate.

Not All Supplements Are Created Equal

This recall serves as an important reminder that not all products you can get at the store are safe or effective.

For example, you may remember that in February of 2015, the New York Attorney General made news by pulling Walmart, Target, GNC, and Walgreens brand herbal supplements off the shelves on the grounds that they were adulterated and/or mislabeled. Indeed, testing had revealed that these products rarely contained the ingredients on the label, and sometimes contained other, unlabeled ingredients that could potentially pose a danger to certain individuals.

Unlike herbal supplements, dietary supplements such as vitamins are subject to FDA oversight. However, this still doesn’t guarantee that all products are of equal quality. For example, some supplements may just contain the cheapest form of a given mineral such as calcium. The cheapest form is often also the least bioavailable, meaning the least useful to your body. This means you’re not really getting the amount of the mineral you need for optimum health.
