Best Supplements for Menopausal Women

July 17th, 2014

Supplements can help you get the nutrition your changing body needs during menopause.

Due to changes in body chemistry and metabolism, your dietary needs change as you enter menopause. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to get the nutrition you need from your regular diet, Transitioning to more fresh, healthy, unprocessed foods will help, but you may still find that gaps in your nutrition are affecting how you look and feel. This is where well-chosen supplements can be invaluable.

At Renew Woman™, we can provide lab testing to help identify your needs for certain vitamins and minerals and prescribe supplements accordingly. Meanwhile, you can review this list of recommended supplements for an idea of what the average menopausal woman might need to take beyond a basic multi-vitamin or mineral complex.

Vitamins

B Vitamins: It’s a good idea to take a complete Vitamin B-Complex supplement to ensure you get all the different B Vitamins necessary to promote heart health, support your immune system, and help keep your skin and hair looking youthful.

Vitamin D3: This vitamin helps regulate calcium levels in the body to protect against osteoporosis. Menopausal women do need a lot of Vitamin D, but bear in mind that too much of this vitamin can be harmful. Don’t supplement this vitamin beyond your regular multi-vitamin without a doctor’s recommendation.

Minerals

Calcium, Magnesium, and Phosphorus: These three vitamins are essential for maintaining strong, healthy bones during menopause.

Iron: Without enough iron in your system, your cells won’t be able to get enough oxygen. Iron is another nutrient that can be dangerous in excess, so again, don’t take any more iron than can be found in a multi-vitamin without a doctor’s advice.

Iodine: Many menopausal women suffer from thyroid decline. Taking an iodine supplement can help relieve symptoms by promoting your body’s ability to convert the T4 thyroid hormone into the more usable T3 free form.

Other Supplements

Omega 3s: Taking a fish oil or flax seed oil supplement can help you get the Omega-3s needed to promote a healthy brain and heart.

CoQ10: CoQ10 receptors can be found throughout the body, making this supplement an effective way to promote overall health. CoQ10 is particularly helpful for safeguarding heart health.

DIM: Dindolylmethane extract (DIM) helps to promote the safe metabolism of estrogen, which in turn helps to protect against breast cancer.

Folonic Acid: Folonic acid is a safe alternative to folate that helps to prevent some cancers as well as promote proper hormone absorption and function.

When Nutrition Isn’t Enough

Changing your diet and including supplements can help your body make better use of the hormones it has. But if you are hormone deficient, you will never feel your best on supplements alone. Instead, you will need to investigate other treatment options including hormone replacement therapy. At Renew Woman™, we offer safe and effective bioidentical hormone replacement therapy that can be used to help menopausal women achieve and maintain balance in their hormones and in their lives.
